A water softener that has been sitting unused should not simply be plugged in and forgotten. Salt can harden, valves can stick, drain lines can become blocked and stored water can develop an odor. A careful restart helps you find those problems before the system begins sending treated water through the house.

This applies when a home has been vacant, a seasonal property is being reopened or a softener has remained in bypass for an extended period. If the equipment froze, leaked, was exposed to sewage or floodwater, or has damaged wiring, leave it out of service and call a qualified professional.

Identify what was shut down

Start by determining the system's present condition. Check whether it is plugged in, whether its clock or display is working and whether the bypass valve is in service or bypass. Do not move a valve until you know which position it is in and have looked for cracked fittings, loose connections and water beneath the equipment.

Find the model number and operating instructions if possible. You need to know how to set the clock, start a manual regeneration and confirm the correct salt setting. If the controls use programmed hardness, capacity or regeneration settings, record the existing values before changing anything.

Inspect the brine tank before adding salt

Open the brine tank and look at the salt rather than automatically pouring in another bag. Salt that appears full at the top may have formed a hard bridge with an empty space underneath. A solid mass at the bottom may also prevent proper brine production.

Use a blunt tool carefully to test whether the salt is loose. Do not strike the tank, puncture its walls or force a tool into the brine well. If the salt has turned into a dense, dirty mass, removing it and cleaning the tank may be more useful than adding fresh salt on top.

Also check the brine well, float assembly and small tubing between the brine tank and control valve. Tubing should not be kinked, split or disconnected. The float should move freely. Standing water is not automatically a defect because normal water level varies by design, but an unusually full tank deserves attention before regeneration.

Check the drain route

A regeneration sends a substantial flow to the drain. Trace the drain hose from the control valve to its discharge point. Look for kinks, crushed sections, loose fittings and obstructions. Confirm that the hose is secured so it cannot jump out when water begins flowing.

The discharge arrangement should maintain the required air gap and should not create a direct cross connection with a sewer line. If you cannot tell whether the drain setup is safe or permitted, have a plumber inspect it before operating the system.

Restore water slowly

If the softener has been depressurized, open the water supply gradually. A sudden rush of water can disturb resin and place unnecessary stress on fittings. Watch the valve, bypass, connectors, drain connection and nearby floor while pressure returns.

Leave the softener in bypass at first if you need to inspect the pressurized connections without sending water through the mineral tank. Once the equipment remains dry and stable, move the bypass toward the service position slowly, following the manufacturer's instructions.

Use the specified cleaning procedure

Idle equipment may need cleaning or sanitizing before normal use. Follow the procedure for the exact model. The approved product, amount, placement and rinse process can differ among systems. Do not improvise with household chemicals or combine cleaners.

If the manufacturer does not provide instructions, contact the equipment supplier or a qualified water treatment professional. Ask what procedure applies to the resin tank, brine tank and any filters installed before or after the softener.

Run and observe a manual regeneration

Set the correct clock first, then initiate a manual regeneration. Stay nearby for the beginning of each cycle. Confirm that water reaches the drain, the drain connection remains secure and no fittings leak.

During the brine draw stage, note whether the water level in the brine tank falls. During refill, confirm that the system returns the expected amount of water to the tank. A brine level that never changes can point to a blocked injector, air leak, stuck float, restricted drain or control problem.

Do not repeatedly start extra regenerations to overcome a fault you have not identified. Repeated cycles waste water and may overfill the brine tank without correcting the cause.

Flush the household plumbing

After the softener completes its cycle, run cold water from an appropriate fixture until it is clear and free of unusual odor. Remove and clean faucet aerators if debris has collected during the restart. Follow the manufacturer's direction before using hot water, since filling the water heater with questionable or poorly rinsed water can make the cleanup larger.

If the home has additional cartridges, ultraviolet equipment, reverse osmosis equipment or other treatment stages, restart each component according to its own instructions. A working softener does not confirm that the rest of the treatment train is ready.

Verify performance instead of judging by feel

Slippery water, soap lather and the absence of visible scale are not precise startup tests. Compare hardness before and after the softener with an appropriate test. Sample from locations that clearly represent untreated and treated water, and make sure no partially open bypass is blending the two.

If treated hardness remains high, check the programmed hardness setting, salt condition, bypass position and whether brine was actually drawn. A service company should be able to explain what it tested, where it sampled and what result shows that the equipment is operating correctly.

Decide who owns the next maintenance task

A successful restart is not the end of the job. Assign the next salt check, filter change and visual leak inspection to a specific person. Make sure that person knows where the bypass is, where the drain discharges and whom to call if the softener begins running continuously or the brine tank overfills.

When comparing companies for ongoing support, use the site's water treatment report card and review how the ratings are calculated. Look for a provider that can identify the equipment, explain its required upkeep and verify operation after service.

Leave the system in bypass and arrange service if you find a leak, damaged electrical parts, a blocked drain, a tank that may have frozen, persistent odor or discoloration, or a regeneration that does not advance normally. Restarting carefully is useful, but it should not turn an uncertain equipment condition into a household plumbing problem.
